MOTIVATION

We overcome the borders, but feelings of alienation and homesickness are a high price to be paid.
The German author Ingeborg Bachmann described these feelings, others talk about the irritation, the internal struggle to accommodate in a different society. The project will listen to the voice of people who have lived through this kind of changes. We concentrate on interviews, diaries or pieces of literature, autobiographies or other self-reflecting documents.

Living in a country other than the one in which you were born is worldwide normality and characterizes the migration of the 20th and 21st centuries. Today, migration can be seen in many areas of society.

The first period, we are very concerned about is the situation of displaces persons at the end of WWII. Situated near Dachau concentration camp, we as a school take part in the annual remembrance walk “Gedenken im Würmtal“. Guests from Israel who survived the liberation here in Bavaria and their descendants come here for memorial in May. Zwi Katz, who has been participating each year since 1996, wrote a book about his memories. He moved to Israel and we would like to invite students of a school in Haifa to intensify the contact and mutual knowledge about this period of time. His biography is an historical example and we expect to find parallels to other life stories.

One speaks of labour migration when the people concerned are resident in another country in order to be able to work there primarily. People who live in a foreign country mainly to obtain higher vocational qualifications, for example through initial or further training, are concerned with educational migration.

OBJECTIVES

There are regular publications on our homepage in which all results of the research/ events and essential information will be published (in English/ at least first a summary in English). In the regular annual report we will obtain visible interim results. Towards the end of our project we will assemble these results to the final conclusions of our project, published in form of an e-book. For every major event there will be a printed flyer in English and the respective national language. Further considerations (exhibitions etc.).

On the other hand, the social skills of the participating students and teachers are to be cultivated.

These include, for example:

  • Face-to-face communication in a foreign language
  • Collaboration in transnational teams
  • Creation of a basis of trust in intercultural teams
  • Establishing transnational friendships and relationships
  • Teacher experience in the context of the host country
  • Political component:
  • To learn about migration in the main countries affected (Italy/Greece/Portugal) directly and not through the media.

Last but not least, we expect results that shall create a real and lasting European value not only at the pupil-level, but also at an institution-level because the project will benefit all institutions involved in our research – local communities, voluntary organizations etc.
